Tu Nidito’s Telephone of the Wind

Grief can leave people searching for words that are difficult to say out loud, or feeling like there are still things left unsaid. The Telephone of the Wind offers a rare form of grief support: a simple, symbolic space where children, teens, and adults can express love, memories, regrets, gratitude, or hopes to someone they miss. There is no expectation, no script, and no “right” way to use it. Whether someone whispers a treasured memory, shares an important life update, or simply sits quietly with a loved one’s presence in their heart, the experience can be deeply personal and meaningful.

At Tu Nidito, we know that healing doesn’t mean letting go of the people we love—it means finding healthy ways to stay connected while moving forward. The Telephone of the Wind honors that enduring bond and reminds families that love continues, even after loss.

The Telephone of the Wind is a quiet place where individuals can connect with the memory of someone they love. It is an unconnected telephone that serves as a symbolic way to express thoughts, memories, and feelings to someone who has died or is no longer physically present. Inspired by the global Wind Phone movement which started in Japan in 2010, it provides a meaningful opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and continuing bonds with loved ones.

A Place for Reflection and Healing

Our Telephone of the Wind was installed in June 2023, it is available to the public, and is located on the grounds of Tu Nidito at:

The telephone is situated beneath a shaded tree in one of the most private areas of our campus, intentionally chosen to provide a peaceful, natural setting for personal reflection. The gentle sound of the wind through the trees and a nearby bench create a comforting environment where individuals or families can spend time together, remember a loved one, and find moments of peace.

The Telephone of the Wind is available to the public during Tu Nidito’s business hours:

Supporting Grief Through Meaningful Connection

Here at Tu Nidito, which means “Your Little Nest” in Spanish, we provide compassionate grief support for children, teens, young adults, and families experiencing the diagnosis of a serious medical condition or the death of someone they love. Through peer support groups and innovative grief programs, we help create a community where grief is acknowledged, understood, and supported.

The Telephone of the Wind is one example of how we offer meaningful ways to process loss. For many visitors, speaking into the phone becomes an opportunity to express emotions, share memories, celebrate milestones, or simply say the words that remain in their hearts. While the telephone is not connected to a phone line, the experience can foster healing, comfort, and a continued sense of connection.

There is no timeline for grief, and there is no limit to the ways people can remember those they love. Peer-To-Peer Support

Programs for families grieving the death of a loved one or a caregiver’s serious medical diagnosis

Why split up families into peer groups?

At Tu Nidito, we offer two types of support groups:

For families who are grieving the death of a special person
For families when a parent or adult caregiver has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

In both of these support groups, we provide age-appropriate emotional support that meets the developmental needs of participants. We achieve this by dividing families into four separate sub-groups: Littles (ages 4 to 7), Middles (ages 8 to 12) Teens (ages 13 to 18) and Adults (parents and caregivers).

Who is a Group Coordinator?

Tu Nidito groups are run by staff members called Group Coordinators. In addition to providing emotional support and community resources to families both during and outside of group nights, Group Coordinators also handle group logistics and oversee the volunteer facilitators.

Who facilitates the groups?

Facilitators are a very important part of Tu Nidito groups. They are trained volunteers and assigned to an age group so they can work directly with the children and adults. With the support of the Group Coordinator, they lead each part of the group evening: the agreements, check-in, talking circle question, activity and closing. Our facilitators are made up of undergraduate students, young professionals, and retirees.

What are the group agreements?

Group Agreements are a way for our group members to feel comfortable and safe. The rules are a bit different for each age group, but here are some of our important ones:

The “I Pass” Agreement: You can always say “I Pass” if you are called on to share and you do not want to or are not ready.
Confidentiality: Anything you or anyone else says in group will remain private, unless there is concern of harm to yourself or others.
Talking Stick Agreement, or “Taking Turns” Agreement: Everyone will have an opportunity to share, uninterrupted.
Comparing Losses Agreement: Everyone’s loss and experience with grief is different, therefore participants will not compare their grief or loss with someone else’s.
Advice Agreement: We ask that each participant refrain from giving advice to their fellow group members, unless that person explicitly asks for advice.

How does a group begin?

Each night, we start our group with a check-in once we are in our Sharing Circle Room. We do this with all age groups.

For bereavement support groups, participants say:

Their name
The name of their special person or people who died
How they died
How they are feeling that night

For support groups for families impacted by a caregiver’s serious diagnosis, participants say:

Their name
The name of their family member with a serious diagnosis
What the diagnosis is
How they are feeling that night

During our groups, we utilize reflective listening, giving the person who is sharing the comfort of knowing they are been heard.

In the past, we used a Talking Stick that we would pass around the room, giving each person the opportunity to do their check-in. During Zoom groups, each person is called by name when it’s their turn to talk.

What is a Talking Circle Question?

An example of a Talking Circle Question in our Littles group might be:

What do you wish you could say to your special person?

A Teen question might be:

Who told you when your special person died? Did someone provide comfort to you at that time?

The questions provide a path for everyone to feel safe in exploring their feelings and finding common ground with others.

Adults also have their own Talking Circle Question and discuss what their children are being asked so that they can continue talking about the subject as a family if they wish.

What sorts of activities do you do during group?

There are many important things we can do when we are grieving or experiencing the impacts of a diagnosis. At Tu Nidito we might draw or sketch images of our feelings, write letters to the person who died, or to the serious medical condition itself. We read books and play games to have fun and feel validated. We learn coping skills to calm our bodies and minds, such as deep breathing. Every group is something different, which means there’s always something new to do!

How does a group night end?

At the end of each group night, we will take a few moments to honor and celebrate any birthdays, death anniversaries, or other special days that might be coming up. Afterwards, we typically hold hands and pass around a “love squeeze” as a way for everyone to take home all of the love, comfort, hope, and support that they received from each other that night.

Since we now meet on Zoom, everyone puts their hand up towards their camera and on the count of three, we all squeeze our hands into fists and say “I got it,” signifying that each person “got” all that love and warmth. This tides us over until the next time we get to meet again.

Tools For Handling Back-to-School Season While Grieving

After a long summer break, it can be challenging to return to a school routine. When you combine the element of grief, it can be particularly challenging for the entire family. Children and teens who are processing their own grief will likely find this change in their day-to-day activities overwhelming and with that experience increased anxiety. If you are a parent or caregiver of a grieving child or teen, the feeling of being overwhelmed might be familiar.

Tu Nidito offers one-on-one and group support twice every month to children and families going through a serious medical diagnosis or the death of a loved one. Each time, our Support Specialists are there to provide support and comfort in a warm and welcoming environment.

Here are some tools we hope you find useful to practice at home during this back-to-school season:

1. Take care of yourself.

Any sort of activity while grieving might seem difficult, but any steps you can make to practice self care will make a difference. Children feel better supported and understood by a healthy adult.

2. Listen.

Be there and take the time to listen. By being open with your own experience of grief and sharing memories and stories, it will open the door for deeper communication. Even when they have nothing to say at a given point, remind them that you are there to listen should they want to share their feelings.

3. Create Your Own Little Nest.

You can pick a spot in your home for you and your child or teen that feels comforting and safe. Take a moment after or before school to let them express and release heavy emotions should they arise. This practice can also be a great source of comfort on difficult days such as birthdays, holidays and anniversaries.

4. Take it one day at a time.

When grieving, most of the intense parts of it take longer to overcome than one might think. Be patient with yourself and provide the same approach to your child or teen. Celebrate small achievements or progress made at school. These may include making a new acquaintance or praise from a teacher.

5. Read “The Kissing Hand”.

This adorable book explores a unique way to connect with your kiddos when they are away. For younger children, school is a big change from their daily routine at home. Tu Nidito’s “Little’s” group read this book during August. It can give them the courage and comfort when they feel heavy emotions during their grief in the school day.

We hope that you find these tools useful during this back-to-school season, and will serve as a reminder that you are not alone.

Extraordinary Volunteer Story: How Tucson’s Chase Lock Came Full Circle

Volunteer Spotlight: Chase Lock is Making a Difference in Tucson

At the age of two, Monday 2 Littles facilitator Chase Lock was diagnosed with a brain tumor, specifically Childhood Choroid Plexus Carcinoma (CPC). While other toddlers were learning to walk, he was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. At five, he experienced a relapse and spent ten months living at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, once again undergoing intensive treatment. He remembers it as a period when he “lived in a hospital,” often traveling out of state for specialized care.

Middle school coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, adding another layer of disruption as he began learning online. By eighth grade, his cancer returned for a third time—this time as a salivary gland cancer. He returned to Phoenix for treatment at the Mayo Clinic while continuing to manage his schoolwork and stay connected with classmates. Throughout high school, he worked to maintain academic momentum alongside ongoing medical care.

Chase experienced another relapse requiring surgery in Minnesota to remove his salivary gland. He and his mother then relocated to Minnesota, where he underwent another round of chemotherapy and radiation. During this time, he found comfort in small moments of escape—in a tiny den where he would retreat to play video games on a bean bag chair, watch movies, and read.

During his most recent treatment in New York, he created his own version of a nest in his room where he could enjoy what his peers enjoy. A lifelong horror film fan, he found that genre especially helpful in taking his mind off treatment. One of his hospital rooms was even decorated in a Halloween theme, reflecting that passion.

“Through these painful situations, I kept pushing to survive,” Chase says.

From Participant to Volunteer to Medical Student in Tucson

Chase and his family were former participants in our Pathways program, where they experienced firsthand the grief and support services offered to families navigating serious medical diagnoses. Today, Chase serves as a facilitator for Monday 2 Littles, consistently showing up ready to play, engage, and hold space for children in the group. Even during parts of 2025 when he was undergoing treatment in New York, he returned to his role whenever he could.

“I remember being that kid,” Chase says. “The kids come in with such heavy hearts. When we are chasing each other, I hear them laugh, and it makes it all worth it.”

Outside of his volunteer work, Chase enjoys catching horror films at AMC Foothills or grabbing a meal at Arby’s. He also has a well-known appreciation for 7-Eleven, where he delights in the variety of snacks and drinks options.

Looking ahead, Chase will begin the Accelerated Pathway to Medical Education (APME) program at the University of Arizona. This seven-year program sets him on a path toward oncology, where he hopes to support patients from the other side of the care experience.

“I want to see patients behind the charts, telling them that I fight for you and with you,” Lock says.

Summer is almost officially here. While schools let out and Southern Arizona heats up, families plan time to relax and recharge together. With Father’s Day later this month, we acknowledge and honor those who have experienced the death of a father or father figure. Fathers who have experienced the death of a child may also struggle more during this time. The approaching holiday and the pressure to take part in summer activities can make it easy for those who are hurting to feel even more isolated.

At Tu Nidito, we know that grief does not take a vacation, so we are always here to be your place for grief support. Whether you are currently enrolled in one of our programs or not, you can reach out for free resources, referrals, or to simply be heard. And if you know someone who is struggling—know, you don’t have to fix everything. You can’t “fix” grief, but there’s so much power in just being present and letting the person in your life know they are not alone.

This coming October marks our 30th anniversary of providing this work in the community—always completely free of charge to families. Like our community depends on us to be the place of comfort and hope they deserve, we depend on the generosity of incredible donors and partners to sustain our programs. HAPPENING AROUND THE NEST

Littles (children ages 4–8) in our bereavement support groups will make puppets this month. Through this activity, Littles can use the puppets to help speak on their behalf and express difficult feelings, remember their person who died, share moments when they were brave, and ask questions they might be afraid to ask otherwise. After sharing, the Littles will use their puppets in a shared puppet show.

Creative activities like these are a core principal to meeting children where they are in their grief journey. It is common that at Tu Nidito, children feel safe enough to voice difficult feelings for the first time. When you support a child in their grief, you also support the adult they become. Because we have supported the community for 30 years, we are proud to serve children of parents who attended Tu Nidito at a younger age. With a $30,000 investment committed by a generous donor, now is a critical time to support our endowment and protect access to care for future generations.

Dear Friends of the Nest,

This coming October marks thirty years since Tu Nidito (at the time Children’s Hospice) opened its doors to our first client: a one-year-old diagnosed with Cirrhosis who survived only 17 days after entering care. During that first year, we supported 12 families with terminally ill children. Our growth since then has been far reaching serving 1,100 individuals in 2025 through nine distinct services. Each year, as we did back in 1996, we start each budget year at zero and work hard to raise the money it takes to ensure our support services are available to our community at no cost to them as we continue to meet the demand for our still non-competitive services.

Our 30th anniversary provides an opportunity to strengthen our mission — not just for this year, but forever. In 2016 we launched an Endowment. We are building on our Endowment Fund to ensure that Tu Nidito will always be here for our community. Since that time, we have grown our endowment fund to more than $730,000. Our goal is to reach a million dollars before taking a disbursement and applying the roughly $40,000 toward our direct care programming. Our hope is to reach that goal this year — and with your help we can.

We are profoundly grateful to have a donor who believes strongly in our mission and growth of our endowment and has generously agreed to match up to $30,000 in endowment donations in 2026 to honor Tu Nidito’s 30th Anniversary.
