Bereaved Parents Awareness Month is a time to:

Why Bereaved Parents Awareness Month is important:

  • The death of a child is a uniquely devastating experience and one of the most difficult experiences a parent can face.
  • Parents who have a child who died are more likely to feel misunderstood, isolated, or difficulty in finding support and resources.
  • Raising awareness can shift the culture around grief, reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations.

How to support bereaved parent:

  • Be present and listen. Simply saying you understand their grief can be dismissive, but acknowledging their grief helps create a safe space where they can openly share their feelings
  • Ask if you can give them practical support. Helping with errands or meals can help alleviate of life’s daily stress, which can sometimes keep someone from processing complicated and painful emotions.
  • Acknowledge important dates. By remembering significant dates for their child, you demonstrate a level of care and respect that speaks volumes about your desire to be present.
