Tu Nidito works hard to avoid having a waiting list for services. In fact, we serve nearly 2,000 people per year.
For child/family support group only, you will be contacted by a Tu Nidito staff member and you will be asked to make an appointment for an in-person orientation and to complete some paperwork. During your orientation, you and your family will get a tour of Tu Nidito and learn more about what to expect from your experience. Once your paperwork is complete you will be placed into a support group night depending on your availability and reason for coming to Tu Nidito.
Families who have a child with a serious medical condition will be contacted by a Support Specialist within 24 hours of referral. The Support Specialist can contact you virtually or come to your home, hospital or another location outside of Tu Nidito to meet you, explain services and determine your family’s needs.
For bereaved young adults ages 18 to 29, please call Tu Nidito or complete the online form and a staff member will assist you with enrollment.
All Tu Nidito grief support services are offered at no cost.
Tu Nidito outcome statistics and best practices indicate that families benefit the most when they stay in our support group services for 12 to 18 months, but each family is different and they are the experts of their grief journey. When families are ready to close their time with the group they are equipped with a toolbox to continue their grief journey at home.
For families with a child with a serious medical condition, Tu Nidito services last for as long as the family needs support and can range from nine months to multiple years.
A family can call and start the process as soon as they feel ready. Each family is unique and each family member grieves differently. We will provide information about our program and offer our insights, but each family is the “expert” of their own grief. We respect their decision to start when the time is right.
Tu Nidito defines a serious medical condition as a progressive, degenerative or malignant medical condition that indicates a strong possibility of the child or primary caregiver’s life being endangered or significantly impacted. Due to Tu Nidito’s need for some parameter of service, chronic, long-term diagnoses/conditions are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Each family is different depending on their needs. Visits can range from several times per week to weekly or monthly.
Support groups are held Monday through Thursday of each week. Families are required to complete an orientation and paperwork prior to attending their assigned group. Groups meet twice monthly at Tu Nidito.
Direct care volunteers work with children, teens, young adults and/or caregivers impacted by serious medical conditions or death. Direct roles include: support group facilitators, one-on-one volunteers and interns. Direct care volunteers must be at least 16 years old (except where otherwise indicated), complete all required paperwork, pass a background check, participate in an introductory interview, participate in all required training and post-training, and make a minimum commitment of 1 year.
For direct care volunteers, previous experience working with children, teens or families around grief, trauma, or through group facilitation is preferred, but not required. What is required is responsibility, compassion, adaptability, a joy for work with others, strong communication skills, and the ability to learn and implement our model.
Indirect volunteers and interns to support office administration, communications and events are also needed.
See our Volunteer page for more information.
Volunteer Training is offered approximately 4 times each year, as needed. Individuals must complete all required training hours prior to volunteering.
If your Fingerprint Clearance Card is valid and doesn’t expire in the next year, you do not need to complete a background check. If you do not have an FCC, a background check link will be sent to you via email.
As a volunteer, you’ll work under the direct supervision of a Group Coordinator. You will work with other volunteers to facilitate the group. You’ll also have guidance from the Group Coordinator during pre- and post-group meetings.
Volunteers meet for their assigned support groups Monday through Thursday nights, 6 – 9 pm. All support groups meet twice monthly in person at Tu Nidito.
We do not offer individual or family counseling. We are a peer support program, which means we provide opportunities for children, teens, young adults and primary caregivers to meet with others their age who are also grieving. As a volunteer, you’ll use the group facilitation skills you’ll learn in training to help create a safe, accepting and welcoming group experience for all participants.
Indirect care volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure all our programs have the administrative and financial support they need to be successful. Indirect volunteer roles vary widely but include: Office volunteers, special event support, board of directors, event or board-level committee work, specialized group projects, select internships, and more. Indirect volunteers do not need to attend new volunteer training. Training will be provided as needed.
Direct care volunteers work directly with children, teens, young adults and/or caregivers impacted by a serious medical condition or death. Direct care volunteers must be at least 16 years old, complete all required paperwork, participate in all required training, pass a background check and make a minimum commitment of 1 year.
