Originally from Phoenix, Amelia Mitchell has been bringing energy, compassion, and encouragement to Tu Nidito’s Littles and Middles groups since 2022. She is currently attending the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where she is pursuing her dream of becoming a pediatrician.
Amelia’s passion for medicine and supporting children was shaped by a deeply personal experience. When Amelia was young, a family friend died from pancreatic cancer. Amelia witnessed firsthand how grief can affect an entire family. That experience inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare and, today, motivates her to support children and families as they navigate their own grief journeys. As a Tu Nidito facilitator, Amelia is committed to creating a space where every participant feels seen, supported, and reminded that they do not have to grieve alone.
“Tu Nidito is an amazing organization and by far my favorite community to be a part of. Since moving to Tucson four years ago, it has become such an important part of my life,” Amelia says. “I love seeing the families support each other through their grief and watching the kids grow up during their time at Tu Nidito.”
This year, Amelia was accepted into the ArizonaLEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) program at the University of Arizona, a prestigious interdisciplinary leadership program that prepares future healthcare professionals, policymakers, family leaders, and self-advocates to advance maternal and child health. Through the program, she hopes to broaden her understanding of caring for individuals with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities while bringing that knowledge into her future career in pediatrics.
When she’s not facilitating support groups or immersed in her studies, Amelia enjoys getting lost in a good book, going for runs, and exploring Arizona’s scenic hiking trails. One of her highlights of the summer was climbing Humphrey’s Peak in Flagstaff, Arizona.
“Being with the kids makes me really happy, and I hope that I make a difference in their lives,” Amelia says.
