About us

About us

With heartfelt intentions, a small group of parents, doctors and community members came together in 1994 to create the concept for Tu Nidito. In 2000, we merged with Children to Children, an organization that provided grief support to thousands—founded in 1988 by Marianna Cacciatore. This merge ushered in an expanded mission and provided a full continuum of support for grieving families. Today, we keep a finger on the pulse of our community’s needs—responding with a helping hand and comforting presence.

Our mission

Tu Nidito exists to establish a compassionate community of acceptance and understanding for those grieving a serious medical condition or death.

Our vision

No child grieves alone.

Our values

We care
We respond
We make a difference

The story behind our name

The story behind our name

Tu Nidito is named in honor of Jimmy Busey. At the age of 5, Jimmy was diagnosed with a primitive neuroectodermal tumor. Throughout his illness, his devoted mother, Teri, often made him a comfort corner on the family sectional couch, calling the space his “little nest.” Throughout all the changes his illness caused, Teri made sure that this space was always there for Jimmy. Despite the efforts of medical treatments, Jimmy died right before the end of first grade. At this time our organization was just forming—and there was no better name than Tu Nidito—your little nest—to convey the mission and spirit of Tu Nidito and honor a special family.
