What happens after I fill in a referral form for serious medical condition support?

Families who have a child with a serious medical condition will be contacted by a Support Specialist within 24 hours of referral. The Support Specialist can contact you virtually or come to your home, hospital or another location outside of Tu Nidito to meet you, explain services and determine your family’s needs. Family’s who need group support group for an adult with a serious medical condition will be contacted by a Tu Nidito staff member and you will be asked to make an appointment for an in-person orientation and to complete some paperwork. During your orientation, you and your family will get a tour of Tu Nidito and learn more about what to expect from your experience. Once your paperwork is complete you will be placed into a support group night depending on your availability and reason for coming to Tu Nidito.

What can my family expect during one-on-one support for a child with a serious medical condition?

Because every family is unique, our one-on-one support is designed solely to meet individual family where they’re at in the treatment of the condition. Visits occur at Tu Nidito, the family’s home, the hospital, or another community location.

How long do families participate in serious medical condition support?

Tu Nidito’s Serious Medical Condition lasts for as long as the family needs support and can range from nine months to multiple years.

Does peer-to-peer support group have rules?

Yes, group rules are a way for our participants to feel comfortable and safe. The rules are a bit different for each age group, but here are some of our important ones: The “I Pass” Rule: You can always say “I Pass” if you are called on to share and you do not want to or are not ready. Confidentiality: Anything you or anyone else says in group will remain private, unless there is concern of harm to yourself or others. Sharing Stick Rule, or “Taking Turns” Rule: Everyone will have an opportunity to share, uninterrupted. Comparing Losses Rule: Everyone’s loss and experience with grief is different, therefore participants will not compare their grief or loss with someone else’s. Advice Rule: We ask that each participant refrain from giving advice to their fellow group members, unless that person explicitly asks for advice.
