“It was easy for me to decide to volunteer for Tu Nidito, for I am a Tu Nidito child—I lost my father suddenly at age 10…there was no question as to what I would do after I retired.”

Volunteer FAQs

How do I become a volunteer and what roles do they serve?2025-01-15T05:39:45+00:00

Direct care volunteers work with children, teens, young adults and/or caregivers impacted by serious medical conditions or death. Direct roles include: support group facilitators, one-on-one volunteers and interns. Direct care volunteers must be at least 16 years old (except where otherwise indicated), complete all required paperwork, pass a background check, participate in an introductory interview, participate in all required training and post-training, and make a minimum commitment of 1 year.

For direct care volunteers, previous experience working with children, teens or families around grief, trauma, or through group facilitation is preferred, but not required. What is required is responsibility, compassion, adaptability, a joy for work with others, strong communication skills, and the ability to learn and implement our model.

Indirect volunteers and interns to support office administration, communications and events are also needed.

See our Volunteer page for more information.

When does volunteer training take place?2025-01-28T23:26:38+00:00

Volunteer Training is offered approximately 4 times each year, as needed. Individuals must complete all required training hours prior to volunteering.

I have an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card—do I still need to complete the background check paperwork?2025-01-28T23:27:16+00:00

If your Fingerprint Clearance Card is valid and doesn’t expire in the next year, you do not need to complete a background check. If you do not have an FCC, a background check link will be sent to you via email.

As a volunteer, will I be running a support group?2025-01-29T02:06:09+00:00

As a volunteer, you’ll work under the direct supervision of a Group Coordinator. You will work with other volunteers to facilitate the group. You’ll also have guidance from the Group Coordinator during pre- and post-group meetings.

When do support groups meet?2025-01-29T01:56:52+00:00

Volunteers meet for their assigned support groups Monday through Thursday nights, 6 – 9 pm. All support groups meet twice monthly in person at Tu Nidito.

Do you provide therapy?2025-01-28T23:30:16+00:00

We do not offer individual or family counseling. We are a peer support program, which means we provide opportunities for children, teens, young adults and primary caregivers to meet with others their age who are also grieving. As a volunteer, you’ll use the group facilitation skills you’ll learn in training to help create a safe, accepting and welcoming group experience for all participants.
